What is Master's Mix – and why is it so popular?

Master's Mix is a proven substrate blend of hardwood sawdust, wheat bran and gypsum. This combination has established itself worldwide as a premium substrate for growing gourmet mushrooms. The reason: the bran supplies nutrients for fast, vigorous mycelium growth, while the sawdust provides a stable structure and keeps moisture even. The result is higher yields and firmer fruiting bodies compared with low-nutrient substrates such as plain straw or CVG.

Why sterilised and not just pasteurised?

Master's Mix contains wheat bran – a nutrient-rich additive that attracts not only mushroom mycelium but also contaminants such as Trichoderma, bacteria and mould. Pasteurisation is not enough for nutrient-rich substrates. That's why we sterilise every batch in the autoclave under controlled conditions: this eliminates all foreign organisms and gives your mycelium a clean head start. The sterile bag with filter patch keeps it that way until you use it.

Every ingredient has its job

Hardwood sawdust

Gives the mycelium a stable structure that is easy to colonise and keeps moisture even throughout the block. Hardwood is preferred by most gourmet mushroom species.

Wheat bran

Supplies nitrogen, proteins and carbohydrates – the nutrients the mycelium needs for fast growth and a high yield of fruiting bodies.

3 bags – for different species or a bigger harvest

With the set of 3 you get three independent, sterile-packed substrate blocks of 3.6 kg each. Ideal for trying out different mushroom species at the same time, increasing your success rate or simply harvesting more. Each bag is sealed individually and can be inoculated independently.

Easy to use with grain spawn

Open the bag under conditions as clean as possible, mix in your fully colonised grain spawn evenly or layer it on top, and close the bag. At a suitable temperature (20–25 °C depending on the species), let the mycelium colonise the block. Once the block is fully colonised, cut the bag open and start fruiting conditions.

Especially suitable for wood-loving edible mushrooms

Master's Mix is the first choice for wood-loving species, including: oyster mushrooms, shiitake, lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus), king oysters, pioppino and maitake. It is also suitable for growing reishi (Ganoderma) as a living wood culture – reishi is not eaten as an edible mushroom, though, but kept as a decorative and living culture.

Safety information Safety notice: fungal spores (respiratory tract)
Mature mushrooms release spores. Inhaling larger amounts of spores can irritate the airways and lungs and, with repeated exposure, trigger allergic reactions up to extrinsic allergic alveolitis ("mushroom worker's lung").
• Let them fruit in well-ventilated rooms; do not set them up in bedrooms or rooms where people spend long periods.
• Harvest mushrooms shortly before they release their spores, to reduce the spore load.
• Sensitive or allergic people, people with pre-existing conditions and anyone with continuous exposure: wear respiratory protection (FFP2/FFP3).
• Never eat contaminated or mouldy cultures; dispose of the bag closed, without stirring up or inhaling spores.

Right of withdrawal Sealed goods for hygiene reasons: The right of withdrawal expires once the seal has been removed or the injection port has been opened (§ 312g para. 2 no. 3 BGB). Details can be found in § 6 of the General Terms and Conditions.
