Mycelium explained simply: The basis of our mushroom cultivation

Stacked substrate blocks, fully colonised in white

Mycelium is the "root network" of mushrooms – and actually the main player. It grows, forms networks, breaks down material, and is the foundation for any cultivation. Here is a simple explanation of why mycelium is so central to us.

What is mycelium?

Mycelium consists of fine threads (hyphae) that run through a substrate. The visible mushroom (fruiting body) is only part of the whole – the mycelium does the actual work in the background. The mushroom belongs to its own kingdom (Fungi); it is neither plant nor animal.

Why is mycelium so exciting?

  • It transforms waste materials into valuable biomass.
  • It is the basis for stable, reproducible cultivation processes.
  • In our own cultivation, we use it to constantly test new substrates and varieties.
