More about this product

Why the Block?

Ever failed with a mushroom kit? Then the Block is your second try. We put the money into the mushroom, not the packaging: it comes in a plain box, but with 3.7 kg of substrate – far more than most kits. That forgives you if you mist a little too much or too little. And if something doesn't work, send us a photo. We'll take a look and tell you what to do.

Quick facts

  • Difficulty: beginner
  • Contents: 3.7 kg block, fully colonised by mycelium, plus spray bottle and instructions
  • You don't need anything else
  • Ready to start: right away, or store it for up to 4 weeks
  • Fully colonised at our mushroom farm in Erlangen

What is it for?

The block arrives fully colonised, white with mycelium. You don't inoculate, sterilise or mix anything. You cut it open, keep it moist and harvest. That works on your first try just as well as for old hands. 3.7 kg of substrate is a lot of food for the mushroom, so after a rest period the next flush comes.

Your species

King Oyster (Pleurotus eryngii), strain KO-MP01 from our lab in Erlangen. The Block comes in five species: see all species.

3 steps to harvest

  1. Cut open: cut the bag open. How and where depends on the species and is explained step by step in the enclosed instructions.
  2. Keep it moist: place the block somewhere bright but out of direct sun, and mist it regularly with the enclosed spray bottle so the surface doesn't dry out. Make sure it gets fresh air.
  3. Harvest: pick the mushrooms once they are fully grown – ideally before they release a lot of spores. The first harvest is enough for several meals. After a rest period, the next flush follows.

Storage

You can store the block for up to 4 weeks before you start it. Important: if the first mushrooms start growing on their own inside the closed bag, the yield goes down. Start soon rather than waiting longer.

Safety

Mushrooms release spores when fruiting. Let the block fruit in a well-ventilated room, not in a bedroom, and air the room regularly. Sensitive or allergic people should ideally wear an FFP2 mask. Never eat mouldy or contaminated mushrooms.

Help

Safety information Safety notice: fungal spores (respiratory tract)
Mature mushrooms release spores. Inhaling larger amounts of spores can irritate the airways and lungs and, with repeated exposure, trigger allergic reactions up to extrinsic allergic alveolitis ("mushroom worker's lung").
• Let them fruit in well-ventilated rooms; do not set them up in bedrooms or rooms where people spend long periods.
• Harvest mushrooms shortly before they release their spores, to reduce the spore load.
• Sensitive or allergic people, people with pre-existing conditions and anyone with continuous exposure: wear respiratory protection (FFP2/FFP3).
• Never eat contaminated or mouldy cultures; dispose of the bag closed, without stirring up or inhaling spores.

Right of withdrawal Perishable or live goods: there is no right of withdrawal (§ 312g (2) no. 2 BGB, German Civil Code). Details in § 6 of our Terms and Conditions.
